We vowed over 36 years ago to have the best speakers available to the profession!
To do this we made a promise to many of you that have been with us since we opened in 1982 that we would never hire sales reps to lecture again. (We tried that from 1983-1987.) We found at the time that this limits your education to certain products and is not as well rounded an education for you. We will have a few sales reps come in that will be unbiased and compare products on this basis. Usually they will also be a licensed Optician so as in my opinion, they will understand what you and i are really doing here!
So we searched for speakers that would be impartial in their thinking and able to give their experiences with products without being biased. This gives you a chance at a better education of the products and practices of our profession. This means we pay our speakers to lecture which adds to our cost of operation. In fact, some of our speakers are part of an Optical College as an instructor.
Be aware of the practice of having sales reps come in with the corporation behind them sharing the cost, a much lower cost or no cost to the organization because the 'company' helps with the cost of getting their rep in front of you. We will only use such a 'rep' if we can bring you other opinions that will not leave you uneducated as to alternatives to the product and how you may want to use each product in your fitting.
Remember, CEDO also has been before the legislature several times over the last 36 years to fight to keep what we do have in licensing at this time. I realize that those who have been at the front lines of this profession for all these years know most of this already, but I am asking for us to inform the newer Opticians who have come into this field and may not know of the history of these fights and practices that are sure to come around again. History always repeats itself!
